KJ sent a fantastic write-up about the Five-0 theme song making a latter-day appearance. Read about it in Five-0 Trivia / Five-0 in Our Culture.

I, too, liked Chin's wife. Chin had a great sense of humor (and a great laugh to go with it) and it seemed like his wife did, as well. I like how she jokingly told him the bribe wasn't for enough money, as if he had really been a part of it all. I thought it was sad that when he came home his kids barely took their attention off the boob tube to acknowledge his presence. At least the little one seemed happy to see her daddy.

Barbara says...
I wish we could have seen more of the actress who played Chin's wife in "Cry, Lie." I loved how much Chin trusted her judgement and how supportive she was of him. They depicted a truly loving relationship. On a lighter note, i can never get over how their kitchen seemed twice as big as their living area!

Re: recording music

Steve's Girl: I think I have a couple of cassette players kicking around, but I don't think I have any cassettes to record on. I'm not even sure if the players work anymore. Good suggestion, though. About six years ago I did invest in a Bose wave radio/CD player and that's about as high-tech as it gets for me. I don't really like to use technology that is dependent on a computer. Maybe I should write a fan fic story where I play a character named Lo Tek.

I watched an episode of the new Five -0 and the writers are starting to tie in the classic series. Steve Jr. has learned that his father and mother were murdered and that the Governor had ordered the hit because he was a man on the take. McGarrett was getting to close to figuring this out. As I still need to reacquaint my self with the series again, when did Steve Sr. meet a woman (get married or not) and an sire a son?

This scenario is in no way based on the original Five-0. It is entirely new plotting. As per information given during the 12 seasons of the series, the original Steve McGarrett did not sire a son. Neither he nor his father was killed aboard the USS Arizona on 12/7/41; rather, his father was run down by a getaway car after a thief held up a supermarket when Steve was 13 years old ("Number One With a Bullet," Part 2, Season 11). Steve did not serve in WWII, only in Korea ("Death is a Company Policy", Season 5, and other episodes).

H50 1.0 Forever: I'm still trying to absorb all the "goodies" found in this website. I was recently looking at the section showing ties to H50 from other sources. I have seen a movie with a "Five-0" tie-in I'd like to share. Is it best to give you the details here or should I email them? I've got to run now, but will check back later. Aloha!

Nell is right. Steve was married to his work. In fact, most of the Five-0 team seemed to be. Of the original "fab" four, only Chin was married, and it is said quite clearly in "Cry, Lie" that he didn't feel that he didn't know his children as well as he wished he did.

H50 1.0: "The Ninety-Second War" really is great. I usually like the Wo Fat eps anyway, but this one was extra good. However, I CRINGE every time I see them flip the car over so jarringly with poor Steve still in it! Good grief!

I wish I could offer suggestions for recording the music, but I am so incredibly low-tech. Sorry.

Goodness, Barbara, you beat me to it! I was just going to thank H50 1.0 for the info on JL and LN. I thought they looked a little chummy in the H50 episode and wondered if they had acted together previously. Now I know.

Lucky, lucky Chelsy, is all I can say.

What you don't know! Or should I say, what I don't know. Thank you for H50 for the information about LN and JL. I know very little about Jack's career outside of "Hawaii Five-0." Truth is that I forget he was an actor. To me he was Steve McGarrett. Yes, KJ, Chelsy really took to Steve! I don't think she knew what a quality man was until she met him!!

CM did enjoy SMcG's company, and I think LN enjoyed JL's company, too. You know they worked together on Broadway in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." He portrayed Brick, while she was Barbara Bel Geddes' understudy. They also appeared together in an episode of "Studio One" (1956).

I just finished watching both parts of "The Ninety-Second War" (Season 4). That really was an excellent production. I need to go back and watch these again. It is too easy to forget how good they are. Somehow, I need to find a way to record the music from these episodes. Any ideas how to do that?

To me Steve McGarrett was a loner, but that was part of his charm. No one could measure up to him. Still, I wish Chelsy Merriman (Lois Nettleman's character in "Sing a Song of Suspense) could have been brought back for a romantic storyline. I think H50 1.0 Forever already mentioned that?

You make a good point, Barbara. The end of "A Bird in the Hand..." would have been very effective with McGarrett tossing a gold "washer" into the air, where the sunlight caught it and glimmered.

And to think I just watched "A Bird in the Hand!" However, that was only my first viewing. I finished rewatching it a second ago. Yes, that was a good ending!

Perhaps Steve's reluctance to make a serious commitment has something to do with being led on and then dumped by hoity-toity Cathy Wallis. (I can't remember if we ever learn her maiden name.) He did seem to want to marry her and it probably took him a while to get over it. Then things didn't work out with Margo Cooper, so maybe he figured, "Oh, why bother?" At least in the earlier years of H50.

That's exactly my fear. At least at the time of "Blind Tiger" and "Most Likely to Murder," McGarrett seemed to me to be more interested in palm readers and women in gold lame pants. After all, those women wouldn't expect him to make a serious commitment, and McGarrett wasn't going to make a serious commitment to any woman. Alas!

"A Five-0 Challenge"

I have written Five-0 fan fiction both for MofH50 writing challenges and on my own. I have woven myself into a story . The reason: An educated man like McGarrett ( he is well versed in art, poetry, literature) with a job like his would demand more from a woman than being easily to bed and having a gorgeous face /body (" and we all lose our charmes in the end"), unless he is after a one night's stand of course. LOL

It's especially telling when DVD's of older shows run about 50 minutes per episode and newer shows are only about 42 minutes or maybe even less. I can remember watching TV as a kid and wanting to go to the bathroom or get something to eat and being afraid to leave the room for fear that I'd miss some of the show. Not anymore!

Steve's Girl: I watched the first season of "Mission: Impossible" and then I got rather involved with "Hawaii Five-0", but I will have to start watching again. It's another show I used to like as a kid. The same with the original "Star Trek." I notice that you've prepared a ST/H50 section on the website. My brother and I get a kick out of spotting the ST guests, while watching the H50 episodes. I've been watching a lot of movies from the '60's and '70's lately and I usually see lots of familiar faces in those too, so it's turning into a sort of game with me. One of these days I guess I'll have to get a life, but not right now. I'm having too much fun. :D

LOL. In order to get Steve to pay attention to me, I'd probably have to write myself in as his secretary. Then he'd be forced to look at me and listen to me. But then I'd have to sit there and watch him "eye" all the chicks who came to the office. (Remember Jenny and Gloria Warren in "Most Likely to Murder?" [Season 2] Some nice close-ups of JL there.) Hmmm.....I need to think this over some more.

Actually, I've never written any fan fiction, although the idea does intrigue me. However, I don't know enough about police work, I'm too lazy and even if I did write something, I'd be too shy to show it to anyone. I do enjoy reading what others have written, though.

My response to "A Five-0 Challenge":

I have written Five-0 fan fiction, both for MofH50 writing challenges and on my own; however, I have not included myself in the storyline. The reason? I don't think Steve McGarrett would give me a second glance. No. He'd pay me about as much attention as he paid Edith Lovallo, when he gave her a courteous nod and kept on going at the end of "Blind Tiger." Something tells me McGarrett was a real heart-breaker. LOL

I definitely agree with KJ about the commercials. They run endlessly!!! Shame on the networks for interrupting the programs so excessively. The DVD of Season 1 of "Blue Bloods" offers deleted scenes with some episodes. When I watch the episode followed by the deleted scenes, it is quite clear how much damage the lengthy commercial breaks are doing. Those scenes go far to explain why characters did what they did in the episode. Too often, the viewer is left dangling. Come on, networks! There's gotta be a better way.

I keep pondering the question H50 Forever posed about how Season 12 could have been improved. I'm almost finished with it, and I still like it, but...The episodes don't have that memorable ending. No (like I just mentioned) Chin catching the badge in "Cry, Lie" or Stumbles throwing the bottle away in the ocean in "Joker's Wild, Man, Wild." Steve often gives a speech at the close of each Season 12 episode. It might have been better to close with a picture rather than a word.

I too have taken to just watching my DVDs. I can't remember the last time I went to the movies, even. I was addicted to watching first-run series when I was younger, but now I almost never do. I think our favorite show stands alone, but when I compare it to what else is on, then I appreciate it evern more. I prefer a slower pace, not so busy background (less traffic and people milling around), and a contained story line. I don't want an "arc" or a cliffhanger. One can jump seasons or watch episodes in any order that way. Plus I think a story that wraps in one episode packs more punch -- like Chin getting his badge back at the end of "Cry, LIe."

Thanks for the idea about hidden gems, Barbara. I think I mentioned before that I flew through Seasons 6 through (most of) 12 because I was watching them through Netflix streaming and I was afraid the access might disappear before I had seen them all. I received Seasons 6 and 7 for Christmas and I am discovering that I had forgotten some of the episodes, so it is almost like seeing them for the first time and that makes me feel a little better. Even some of the episodes that struck me as "blah" the first time around, seem to be a little better the next time I watch them. I guess there are a handful of episodes throughout the entire series that I can't really get into, but I watch them anyway, because there is always something nice to look at in them.

By the way, I also have access to MeTV and noticed that "Hawaii Five-O" was on, as well. Occasionally I'll watch some of the other old shows. I get a kick out of seeing how many "Five-O" guest stars I can spot.

Barbara says...
I'm almost all the way through Season 12, but I know there are some episodes throughout the series I've skipped. Rarely, but every so often, there would be ones I just couldn't watch all the way through. Then again, there are those gems I know I must have seen, but I just cannot remember. For example, in my area "Me TV" is running 5-0 at noon weekdays. They just ran "The Two-Faced Corpse" from I think Season 6. That looked good, but I couldn't stay and watch it all. I'm going to catch up with my DVD copy. Maybe searching for hidden gems will help alleviate the letdown!

It's good to hear that there are still some shows on TV that portray a sense of family values, or any kind of values, for that matter. I don't watch anything regularly and most of the previews I see look like garbage. I might as well pull the plug and save some money. Anyway, these days I'm too spoiled with DVD's. I can watch at my leisure and not have to wait week to week to see what happens or deal with having to wait for a new season to start or have to sit through a bunch of asinine commercials. Makes me wonder how I ever survived in the past! LOL

Hey, I like the new look of the home page! And other changes too.

H50 1.0 FOREVER says...
The letdown is very real. I'm experiencing it. Watching "Blue Bloods" is helping. I bought Season 1. Amazon is taking pre-orders for Season 2, which is airing, now. Although it hits hard, it represents traditional family values, and I like that very much. Five-0 did, too, I thought

Thank you (and Steve's Girl) for mentioning the photo of Marie Lord. I haven't seen that episode, but I peeked at that particular section. It looks so obvious once it's been pointed out, but I don't know if I would have realized it otherwise.

This probably sounds silly, but I am holding off on watching the last several episodes of Season 12. I'm trying to avoid the letdown I will probably feel once I have seen all the episodes, knowing that there will never be any more "new" ones for me to see.

You are absolutely right, Barbara. That is a picture of Marie Lord. Well done!

Re: the Five-0 office in Season 12 - - Yes, it is located in `Iolani Palace. That is not to say that every shot represents the palace location. On occasion, there were lapses in continuity with pictures of the Territorial Office Building being shown. In some cases, the interior and exterior pictures did not match; e.g., the exterior of the palace with the interior of the TOB (and vice versa). We saw more of that in Seasons 9 and 10, although it happened on occasion through the end of the series.

I'm sorry to ask this, as the answer has been posted umpteen times, but I forget. In season 12 is the Five-0 office still located in the Iolani Palace? From the exterior shots it is, but somehow the interior looks different to me. Or is it just me? I know they had to transfer headquarters due to the real life restoration, but I can't remember if they ever shifted back.

A challenge suggested by Steve's Girl:

Go to "A Bird in Hand..." (Season 12) to 27 minutes and some seconds. You will see the photographer pulling exposed film from her camera bag while McGarrett looks on. On the wall you will see a half-dozen or more photographs. A familiar face is in one of those photographs. Who is she?

This challenge is being posted on both sites. You may post your answer in either guestbook.

I finally saw "Bored, She Hung Herself" (Season Two) on YouTube. I hadn't realized it was posted in its entirety. "Bored" would describe my feelings as I watched most of it, but it did get a little more interesting to me as it progressed, although at times I had to keep reminding myself that I was watching an episode of "Hawaii Five-0." It seemed different somehow, but maybe that was due to the quality of the video, which was a bootleg copy. I felt like someone had turned out the lights and swiped my glasses. However, at least now I can say I've seen the "lost episode." I guess if there was one episode that wasn't included with all of the rest, I'm okay that it's this one. I agree with the comments you made at the end of your synopsis of this episode, H50 1.0.

I'm sure there are many older t.v. shows that were never released as DVD's or, if they were, then not all of the seasons made it and/or the quality was not good. This makes me as grateful as all-get-out that "Hawaii Five-0" had all 12 seasons remastered and released. Hopefully it is just a matter of time before ALL fans have access to them.

H50 Forever, I think you are absolutely on the right track as to how Season 12 could have been a ratings success. It really is hard to believe that the same actress portrayed Lori Wilson and the psychotic woman in Season 9's "A Capitol Crime." Sharon Farrell has an edge that could have played well with William Smith. However, I can't see Amanda McBroom's policewoman doing the same. As much as I liked the character, I think she was too much sweet and not enough sassy for Kimo Carew. I've always liked William Smith and I think he could have taken the reigns at Five-0. I'm only a third of the way through Season 12, but so far I haven't seen enough of Truck or Duke. The audience would have been familiar with Moe Keale and of course they knew the Duke character. Perhaps the transition to a new team was too jarring. More screen time for Truck and Duke might have made for an easier transtion and better audience acceptance. I will be thinking of Jack tomorrow! Always a sad day.

123 countries!?! Wow! You go, Five-0!

I like the pastel tie look. And there was one episode, don't ask me which, when he was recuperating from being blown up or flipped over in a car or some such event, and he spent some time in the office wearing a white cardigan and a pretty, predominantly green shirt (I think) and I REALLY liked that look. Can't remember if he ever wore it again.

I, too, am fascinated by the number of countries represented in the people who stop by this site -- 123, to date.

As for the floral ties, I first noticed it in Season 5's "Here Today, Gone Tonight, when Steve wore a yellow/peach/other pastels tie with a yellow shirt. Looked sharp, but definitely 1970s fashion, not 1960s.

Interesting ideas, H50 1.0. You've really thought this one through. I may have to think about this a bit more. I didn't watch Season 12 back when it was originally on, so I can't say how I would have felt back then. I can only say how I feel today, as if the show was still on and we are now watching Season 12. It's interesting that Jack Lord only wanted to do one more season, yet came back for a 12th season.

I would have been okay with Amanda McBroom, since I liked her character. I hadn't realized she was so multi-talented. (I am the most out-of-the-loop person I know!) And yes, it would have been nice if Truck and Duke had been more active, especially Duke since he had been a regular on the show for so long. I think it may have been asking a lot of viewers to keep seeing cast members leave the show, usually with no explanation. I know I enjoyed the show less and less after Chin, then Danny left. At least we knew why Chin left, as sad as it was.

Unfortunately, I'm not a Kimo fan and I really wouldn't have wanted to see him in a bigger role. But this is my personal preference and an expansion of his role could very well have worked for other viewers. I guess as far as I'm concerned, McGarrett was "the man" and I wouldn't really have liked to seen him in a lesser role...but I would have watched as long as he was still involved. Just my two cents worth. Don't know if it makes any sense or not. I'm half asleep.
